Northern soul is in menig opzicht de tegenhanger van de op deze plaats zo vaak bejubelde southern soul. Beide soulstijlen steunen op goede zwarte stemmen, maar daarmee houdt de overeenkomst op. Is de stemming in southern soul vaak droef en zwaarmoedig, in northern soul wordt de meeste tijd een goede luim aan de dag gelegd. En ontrolt een southern soul vertolking zich meestal traag en slepend, in uitvoeringen van northern soul wordt steevast een rap tempo gevoerd. Northern soul is dan ook dansmuziek bij uitstek. De zojuist verschenen vierdelige cd-box A Complete Introduction To Northern Soul maakt zijn pretentieuze titel helemaal waar. Het in Detroit gevestigde Motown Records stond in de eerste jaren zestig aan de wieg van de northern soul en het is dan ook een daad van rechtvaardigheid de eerste twee cd’s van deze box te wijden aan de superieure soulproducties van deze vermaarde platenmaatschappij. De eerste cd is samengesteld uit klassieke hits van grote artiesten uit de Motown-stal - het draaien hiervan is een feest der herkenning. Zo vertolkt Marvin Gaye hier Little Darling (I Need You) en is Stevie Wonder present met Uptight (Everything’s Alright). De tweede cd bestaat uit onbekende, vergeten liedjes die ooit voor Motown zijn opgenomen. Hieronder bevinden zich pareltjes als You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ van Gladys Knight & The Pips en Baby Hit And Run van The Contours. In het kielzog van het succesvolle Motown Records richtten diverse andere labels zich in de loop van de jaren zestig op de northern soul. De vijftig liedjes van de laatste twee cd’s van de box zijn ontleend aan de archieven van zulke labels, zoals Cameo Parkway uit Philadelphia en Stax uit Memphis (!). De derde cd bevat een bonte verzameling van ‘northern floorshakers’. Naast de klassieker Tainted Love van Gloria Jones en het blijmoedige I Got A Feeling van Barbara Randolph treffen we hier een prachtige vertolking van Soul Self Satisfaction door ene Earl Jackson aan. In het noorden van Engeland ontwikkelde zich in de latere jaren zestig een levendige northern soul scene die tot in de jaren tachtig zou blijven floreren. Een aantal soulnummers die de dansende jongeren in de clubs van steden als Manchester en Liverpool in die eerste jaren in vervoering brachten zijn bijeengebracht op de vierde cd van de box. Deze songs en hun vertolkers waren destijds behoorlijk obscuur, maar verwierven in de clubs van Noord-Engeland grote faam. De box A Complete Introduction To Northern Soul is waarlijk een lust voor het oor.
