Salutations is het vervolg op Conor Oberst’s album Ruminations uit 2016. Toen Oberst de nummers schreef voor Ruminations deed hij dat volledig solo – enkel met stem, piano, gitaar en harmonica – maar had hij altijd de intentie om ze op te nemen met een volledige band. Terwijl hij die band aan het verzamelen was kreeg hij zoveel positieve feedback op z’n solo werk dat hij besloot het geheel als solo album uit te brengen.

Salutations is de originele intentie van Ruminations, en bevat de tien nummers van Ruminations met een volledige band gespeeld , plus nog eens 7 extra nummers.
