John Coltrane

In ten years as a bandleader, John Coltrane took the tenor saxophone from bebop to the outer edge of what jazz could be. He first made his name as a sideman with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, broke through with Blue Train (1957) and Giant Steps (1960), and found in his classic quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones the band that recorded My Favorite Things and A Love Supreme. His later work for Impulse! moved steadily towards free improvisation and spiritual themes, up to his death in 1967 at the age of forty. Critic Ira Gitler dubbed his dense, rapid chord runs 'sheets of sound', and the phrase stuck.
