Be Yourself Tonight was originally released in 1985 as an album by Eurythmics, the duo of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. The album marked a shift from the synth-pop of earlier albums towards a sound with soul and rock influences, with real guitars and horns. Would I Lie to You? became a hit in the United States, and There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart), with a harmonica solo by Stevie Wonder, became the duo's only number 1 hit in the United Kingdom. On Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves, Lennox and Aretha Franklin sang a duet, and Elvis Costello contributed to Adrian. The album was largely recorded in Paris.
