Mitski

Mitski made her first two albums as school projects at SUNY Purchase, built around piano and orchestration. For Bury Me at Makeout Creek (2014) she wrote on guitar for the first time; it came out on Double Double Whammy and became her critical breakthrough. Puberty 2 and Be the Cowboy followed, with drum machines, synths, and short, tightly written songs; Vulture placed Be the Cowboy at number 1 in its 2018 year-end list. Laurel Hell became her highest-charting album in 2022, in the US, the UK, and Australia among others. On The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We she traded distortion for choral voices, pedal steel, and country influences; My Love Mine All Mine became her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100.
