Blue Velvet was the first collaboration between composer Angelo Badalamenti and director David Lynch, the start of a partnership that later produced Twin Peaks. Badalamenti wrote string parts that hover between romance and unease, following the double bottom of Lynch's 1986 film. Alongside the score, the album carries "Mysteries of Love", written to a Lynch lyric and sung by Julee Cruise, plus the two pop songs that play a key role in the film: Bobby Vinton's title track and Roy Orbison's "In Dreams". The soundtrack originally appeared in 1986 via Varèse Sarabande and was not pressed on vinyl again for almost thirty years.
