For his second album on Impulse!, originally released in 1963, Charles Mingus put together a large band that sounds like an orchestra in motion. II B.S. is a reworking of Haitian Fight Song, Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul returns from the Mingus Ah Um repertoire and Mood Indigo is a bow to Duke Ellington, the composer he measured himself against all his life. Theme for Lester Young is the same elegy that had earlier been called Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. Bob Hammer helped with the arrangements, which makes the horn sections denser and fiercer than on the smaller line-ups before it.
