The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is a single continuous work in six parts, conceived by Charles Mingus as ballet music and recorded in January 1963 with a large ensemble. He worked the score out with arranger Bob Hammer and used overdubs to stack layers, still unusual in the jazz of the time. The parts carry names such as Solo Dancer and Group Dancers and move from flamenco guitar to collective outbursts and back. The sleeve carried a text by his psychotherapist Edmund Pollock alongside Mingus's own notes. The album originally came out on Impulse! in 1963.
