Funky Nothingness collects recordings Frank Zappa made in early 1970 at the Record Plant in Los Angeles and in his own basement, shortly after the Hot Rats sessions had wrapped. The line-up is small: Zappa with Ian Underwood, bassist Max Bennett, drummer Aynsley Dunbar and violinist Don 'Sugar Cane' Harris, playing in the loose, blues- and jazz-leaning vein of that moment. Some of the material later turned up in reworked form on Chunga's Revenge, which appears here in an early basement version, alongside a Record Plant mix of 'Sharleena'. Ahmet Zappa and archivist Joe Travers compiled the release, which appeared in 2023 on Zappa Records and UMe. This edition is a 2-LP.
