Leviathan is Mastodon's second studio album and their first concept record, inspired by Herman Melville's novel Moby-Dick. The band welds sludge and progressive metal into long, churning tracks such as 'Blood and Thunder' and 'Iron Tusk', with the whale hunt as its thread. Matt Bayles produced the album together with the band. Originally released in 2004 on Relapse Records. Rolling Stone later placed the album at number 46 on 'The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time'.
