The starting point for this album was the collaboration with Elvis Costello, who wrote four songs with McCartney: My Brave Face, You Want Her Too, Don't Be Careless Love and That Day Is Done. On You Want Her Too the two of them cut across each other, with Costello in the role of the cynical counter-voice. Around that sit quieter pieces such as Put It There and Distractions, and at the other end the driving Figure of Eight and Rough Ride. My Brave Face became the first single and reached the top 30 on both sides of the Atlantic. The album was originally released on 5 June 1989 via Parlophone and went to number 1 in the United Kingdom.
