It’s imperative not to trust anyone who doesn’t love Georgie Fame, though we can’t begin to imagine what kind of monster such a person would have to be. Presumably Hitler wasn’t a fan. Setting aside the puzzle of why it should have taken so very long for Fame’s impeccable back catalogue to warrant executive treatment – perhaps because he was less a composer, more a supreme interpreter of other people’s material – The Whole World’s Shaking takes the sum total of all the joy in the cosmos and concentrates it to a potent elixir. Its five discs encompass Fame’s first four albums and their attendant singles, plus an absurdly bounteous agglomeration of extras including Bend A Little, an entire disc of “demos, rarities, B-sides and outtakes” with 18 previously unreleased tracks among its number.
