Brown begon zijn carrière als gospelzanger en sloot zich in de jaren vijftig aan als leadzanger bij een ritme- en blueszanggroep, de Famous Flames. Later richtte hij zijn eigen band op en bracht hij succesvolle singles uit als "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", "I Got You (I Feel Good)" en "It's a Man's Man's Man's World". Terwijl hij de funk naar een nieuw niveau ontwikkelde, creëerde hij de J.B.'s, waarmee hij hits scoorde als "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine" en "The Payback". Brown werd opgenomen in de 1e klas van de Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame, de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame en Songwriters Hall of Fame. In de loop der jaren kreeg hij verschillende eretitels, waaronder "Godfather of Soul", "Mr. Dynamite" en "Soul Brother No. 1".
