Na de release in 1971 was Africa's Blood de eerste plaat die Lee "Scratch" Perry onder zijn eigen naam uitbracht, hoewel zijn band The Upsetters wel op de meeste nummers voorkomt. Als er een album is dat een goed beeld geeft van wat er gebeurde in de Jamaicaanse muziek in de vroege jaren 70, dan is Africa's Blood de juiste keuze. Er is een onmiskenbare invloed van de Amerikaanse hedendaagse R&B, maar toch komt Perry's kenmerkende dub en reggaefusie door.
