Na het commercieel mislukte Astral Weeks trok Van Morrison naar het noorden van de staat New York en schreef daar kortere, strakker gebouwde liedjes. Moondance, oorspronkelijk uitgebracht in januari 1970 via Warner Bros., is het resultaat: blazers, een swingende ritmesectie en gospelachtige achtergrondzang onder And It Stoned Me, Caravan, Crazy Love en Into the Mystic. Hij produceerde het album zelf en nam het op in A&R Studios in New York. Het titelnummer en Into the Mystic werden vaste waarden op de Amerikaanse FM-radio. Deze uitgave is een 3-lp in een uitgebreide editie met alternatieve takes en outtakes.
