After ten years with EMI, André Hazes was given the freedom to make an album exactly the way he wanted, and he chose the music he loved to play at home: blues and rock 'n' roll. Dit is wat ik wil was originally released in 1989 and sets Dutch-language songs such as "Ik ben een gokker", "Volgens mij ben ik getrouwd" and "Jammer!" alongside English-language standards like "The Thrill Is Gone", "I've Been Loving You Too Long" and "Working in a Coal Mine". Hazes brought guests from the Dutch rock scene into the studio: Herman Brood sings "What'd I Say" with him, and guitarist Jan Akkerman and Kaz Lux also take part.
