Billy Joel

Billy Joel grew up on Long Island and built his career around the piano. After a difficult start he broke through in 1977 with The Stranger, home to Just the Way You Are, Movin' Out (Anthony's Song), and Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. Each record after that shifted shape: the harder, new wave-fed Glass Houses, the politically charged The Nylon Curtain with Allentown and Goodnight Saigon, and the doo-wop homage An Innocent Man with Uptown Girl. With River of Dreams in 1993 he stopped making pop albums and carried on as a live performer, including a long-running monthly residency at Madison Square Garden that ended in 2024. In May 2025 he cancelled his scheduled concerts after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus. The two-part documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes appeared the same year.
