After the success of their debut, De La Soul turned darker. De La Soul Is Dead originally appeared in 1991, again produced by Prince Paul, with a toppled flowerpot of broken daisies on the sleeve and lyrics mocking the flower-child image the press had pinned on the group. Skits built around the fictional radio station WRMS hold the album together; Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa tells a story of abuse inside a family, while Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey) and A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays show the lighter side. The Source gave the album five mics, its highest rating, and the RIAA certified it gold.
