Marshall Mathers from Detroit broke through in 1999 with The Slim Shady LP, produced by Dr. Dre, and within a few years he was the best-selling rapper in the world. His alter ego Slim Shady gave him room for dark humour and shock, while albums such as The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show also dealt with his Detroit childhood, his mother and fatherhood. 'Lose Yourself', from the film 8 Mile, made him the first rapper to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2003, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. After a break and an addiction to painkillers he returned with Recovery, and in 2024 he closed the book on his alter ego with The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce). His technique, with stacked rhyme schemes, breath control and abrupt shifts in tempo, has remained a benchmark for many rappers since.
