For their second studio album, Grateful Dead worked experimentally: live recordings and studio material were edited into a continuous collage, blurring the line between stage and studio. The record is built around long suites such as "That's It for the Other One" and "Alligator", through which the band moves freely across shifting tempos and textures. The result is one of their least conventional records and a clear break from the blues-rock of the debut.
