Guru, the voice of Gang Starr, wanted to bring hip-hop and jazz together not through samples but with the musicians themselves. On Jazzmatazz, Volume 1 jazz greats such as Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers, Branford Marsalis and Lonnie Liston Smith play live, alongside guitarist Ronny Jordan. N'Dea Davenport of The Brand New Heavies sings, and French rapper MC Solaar takes a verse on Le Bien, Le Mal. Loungin', Trust Me and No Time to Play were singles. The album dates from 1993.
