Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar turned hip-hop back into a storytelling medium. Out of Compton came good kid, m.A.A.d city (2012), a cinematic coming-of-age album about his own neighbourhood, and To Pimp a Butterfly (2015), built on live jazz, funk, and spoken word around Black identity in America. DAMN., from 2017, received the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2018, the first album outside classical music and jazz to do so. The introspective Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers (2022) followed, then the unannounced GNX (2024), made largely with Sounwave, Jack Antonoff, and Mustard. His 2025 Super Bowl halftime show drew 133.5 million viewers, more than the game itself, and GNX won the Grammy for Best Rap Album in 2026.
