For ten years it looked as if David Bowie had stopped recording. Then, on his 66th birthday in January 2013, the restrained single Where Are We Now? appeared without any warning, revealing that a complete album had been recorded in secret in New York with long-time producer Tony Visconti. The Next Day, originally released in March 2013, became Bowie's first UK number one album since Black Tie White Noise in 1993. Alongside Where Are We Now? it holds the title track and The Stars (Are Out Tonight), played by the musicians who had surrounded him since the nineties. For the sleeve, designer Jonathan Barnbrook simply pasted a white square over the 1977 “Heroes” cover, a gesture that says exactly how the album deals with its own past. This edition is a 2-LP on black vinyl.
