Dance into the Light was the first album Phil Collins made as a full-time solo artist, after leaving Genesis earlier that year. He recorded the sixth studio album, originally released in 1996, with Hugh Padgham in a French chateau, using Sting's mobile studio. Collins went back to a real drum kit instead of the drum machine of his previous album, and wrote more up-tempo songs with more guitar and rhythms indebted to African music and Youssou N'Dour. The Vine Street Horns made their studio debut here, and the album closes with a cover of Bob Dylan's The Times They Are a-Changin'. In Germany and Switzerland the album went to number 1.
