Beneath the Remains, Sepultura's third studio album and their first for Roadrunner Records, lifted the Brazilian band out of obscurity and onto the map of international extreme metal. Recording took place in late 1988 at Nas Nuvens Studio in Rio de Janeiro, at night from eight to five, with Scott Burns as producer; he brought his own drum gear and Mesa Boogie amps to Brazil. After the acoustic intro the title track tears loose, and through Inner Self, Mass Hypnosis and Slaves of Pain the album races on to Primitive Future: thrash with the weight of death metal, more technical than the first two albums. AllMusic calls it "one of the most essential death/thrash metal albums of all time". The cover, Nightmare in Red, is by Michael Whelan.
