Lucinda Williams

Lucinda Williams has been writing songs on the border of country, blues and rock since the late 1970s. Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, as the daughter of the poet Miller Williams, she debuted in 1979 with an album of blues and folk covers; Happy Woman Blues (1980) was the first to consist entirely of her own material. Recognition took a long time to arrive. Her self-titled 1988 album contained Passionate Kisses, which won her a Grammy for Best Country Song in 1994 through Mary Chapin Carpenter's version, and Car Wheels on a Gravel Road brought her a much wider audience in 1998. Time called her "America's best songwriter" in 2002. A stroke in November 2020 left her unable to play guitar, but she kept writing, singing and recording, from the Lu's Jukebox covers series to Stories from a Rock N Roll Heart in 2023.
