After Mike Barson left, Madness recorded Mad Not Mad with session players, a thick layer of synthesizers and strings, far from the ska the band started with. The album produced the singles Yesterday's Men and Uncle Sam, plus a version of Sweetest Girl by Scritti Politti. The lyrics are bleaker than the early work, dealing with growing older, decline and a loss of direction. Commercially it fell short of its predecessors and in 1986 the band broke up. It originally appeared in 1985 on Zarjazz, the band's own sublabel.
