Mariah Carey broke through in 1990 with her self-titled debut, which produced four consecutive number-one singles in the United States. Over the years that followed she helped set the tone for the pop and R&B of that decade: the ballads of Music Box and Daydream, the whistle register she became known for, and with Butterfly in 1997 a clear move towards hip-hop production and guest rappers. After a difficult period around Glitter, she returned in 2005 with The Emancipation of Mimi, whose single We Belong Together spent fourteen weeks at number one. Alongside that, her 1994 Christmas album Merry Christmas and All I Want for Christmas Is You return to the charts every year. Here for It All, her sixteenth studio album, appeared in 2025.
