Prince

Prince Rogers Nelson (1958-2016) built his music in Minneapolis out of funk, rock, soul, pop and new wave running into one another. On his debut For You (1978) he played nearly every instrument himself, and he kept writing, playing and producing on his own terms for the rest of his career. Dirty Mind and 1999 carried the Minneapolis sound to a wide audience, the film and soundtrack Purple Rain (1984) won him an Academy Award, and Sign O' The Times (1987) was voted album of 1987 by the critics of The Village Voice. Through the nineties he fought his contract with Warner Bros., replaced his name with an unpronounceable symbol and put his work out on his own NPG Records label. He kept recording at his Paisley Park studio in Chanhassen until his death in 2016; ever since, albums he left unreleased have been appearing from the archive there, the Vault.
