Before the Frost...Until the Freeze was recorded the way studio albums rarely are: in Levon Helm's barn in Woodstock, in early 2009, live in front of an audience. Producer Paul Stacey caught band and room in the same take, which you hear in the country leaning side of Good Morning Captain and Appaloosa and in the longer jams. The eighth studio album originally appeared in 2009; its second half, Until the Freeze, was at first only available as a download.
