This Was is the debut album by Jethro Tull, recorded in the summer of 1968 at Sound Techniques Studio in London. The band still sounds mostly like a blues group here, with guitarist Mick Abrahams as a second leader alongside Ian Anderson. 'Cat's Squirrel' and 'Beggar's Farm' come straight out of the British blues revival of the moment, while 'Serenade to a Cuckoo' is an arrangement of a piece by jazz flautist Roland Kirk, the direct model on which Anderson built his own flute playing. The title refers to the line on the sleeve saying this was how the band was playing then, and that proved accurate: Abrahams left before the year was out. This edition is an LP on 180 gram vinyl with the 2008 stereo mix.
