Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Brian Wilson, Nick Lowe and Dan Penn: for Don't Give Up on Me, a line of major songwriters contributed new or previously unreleased songs for the voice of Solomon Burke. Producer Joe Henry recorded the album live in the studio in four days, with a sparse band around Burke's vocals. Daniel Lanois plays electric guitar on Dylan's 'Stepchild' and The Blind Boys of Alabama sing backing vocals on 'None of Us Are Free'. Dan Penn's title track became a fixture of Burke's concerts and, through the TV series The O.C., introduced him to a new generation of listeners. The original 2002 album won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
