Stone Temple Pilots

Stone Temple Pilots broke out of San Diego in 1992 with Core, a debut that arrived in grunge's slipstream but leaned harder on riffs than the sound coming out of Seattle. Singer Scott Weiland and brothers Robert and Dean DeLeo also had an ear for melody: Plush won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1994 and follow-up album Purple went to number 1 on the US album chart that same year. After that the band refused to settle on one sound, from the glam and psychedelia of Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop to the quieter side of No. 4 and Shangri-La Dee Da. Their history has sharp breaks: the band split in 2003, returned in 2008 and parted ways with Weiland in 2013. Weiland died in 2015. Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington fronted the band between 2013 and 2015, and Jeff Gutt has held the microphone since 2017, with a self-titled album in 2018 and the largely acoustic Perdida in 2020.
