The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion is where The Black Crowes broke through. Guitarist Marc Ford had just joined and his playing pushes Sting Me, Remedy and Thorn In My Pride towards a bluesier, heavier place than the debut. The second studio album was again produced by George Drakoulias and originally came out in 1992 on Def American, entering the US chart at number one. The title comes from a nineteenth-century American hymn book, and that gospel streak returns in the backing vocals and in Eddie Harsch's organ.
This edition is a 4-LP box on 180 gram vinyl, adding a disc of outtakes and B-sides and a 1993 concert from Houston to the remastered album.
