The Who

The Who formed in West London in 1964 around Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon. After the singles years of 'My Generation', 'Substitute' and 'I Can See For Miles' the band moved to a larger scale: the 1969 rock opera Tommy, the synthesiser loops and roar of Who's Next, and the mod portrait Quadrophenia. Townshend's slashing chords, Entwistle's melodic bass, Moon's unbound drumming and Daltrey's voice added up to a sound that fed generations of British rock bands. The deaths of Keith Moon in 1978 and John Entwistle in 2002 changed the line-up, but Daltrey and Townshend kept playing until their farewell tour in 2025.
