Licensed to Ill originally came out in 1986 on Def Jam and became the first rap album to top the US Billboard 200. Rick Rubin built the production around hard drum machines and rock guitars, with samples from Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath and a solo by Slayer guitarist Kerry King on 'No Sleep Till Brooklyn'. Ad-Rock, MCA and Mike D shout their way across it, and '(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)', written as a parody of party rock, became their biggest hit. 'Brass Monkey', 'Paul Revere' and 'She's Crafty' also feature on the debut by the New York trio, which brought rap to an audience that had barely bought the genre before.
