By the time Billy Joel was filling large halls after The Stranger and Glass Houses, the wider public barely knew his first four records. Songs in the Attic, his first live album, was the answer to that: on the 1980 tour he recorded almost nothing but older material, from Captain Jack and The Ballad of Billy the Kid to Los Angelenos and Streetlife Serenader, played by the band he was on stage with every night. The recordings come from venues of widely differing size, from clubs to arenas. Say Goodbye to Hollywood and She's Got a Way were issued as singles and both became hits, something the studio versions had never managed. The album originally appeared in 1981.
