Born to Run, originally released in 1975, was Springsteen's third album and his last chance at Columbia Records: the first two records had barely sold. He spent months on the title track alone, and together with Jon Landau and Mike Appel he built a dense, echoing wall of piano, saxophone, glockenspiel and stacked guitars. The eight songs form one long night, from "Thunder Road" at sundown to the almost ten-minute street epic "Jungleland". In October 1975 Springsteen appeared on the covers of Time and Newsweek in the same week.
