For The Ghost of Tom Joad Bruce Springsteen returned to the bare, acoustic approach of Nebraska. The title refers to the central character of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, and the songs deal with Mexican migrants, day labourers and people living at the edge of the American economy, with place names such as Youngstown, Sinaloa and Balboa Park. Springsteen sings largely in a whisper, accompanied by acoustic guitar and sparse fiddle and pedal steel. The album, which originally dates from 1995, won him a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
