East Coasting was recorded in New York on 16 August 1957 and originally appeared that same year on Bethlehem Records. Charles Mingus fronted a sextet with Jimmy Knepper on trombone, Clarence Shaw on trumpet, Shafi Hadi on saxophone, Dannie Richmond on drums and Bill Evans on piano, shortly before Evans broke through with Miles Davis. Alongside the standard Memories of You there are five originals, among them Celia and Fifty-First Street Blues. The titles East Coasting and West Coast Ghost play with the divide between the east and west coast scenes, a category critics kept trying to fit Mingus into. It remained the only studio meeting between Mingus and Evans.
