Charles Mingus recorded Tijuana Moods in the summer of 1957, inspired by a trip to the Mexican border town, with castanets by Ysabel Morel and flamenco-flavoured passages in Ysabel's Table Dance. A dispute with RCA left the tapes on the shelf for five years and the album did not come out until 1962. On the back of the sleeve Mingus wrote in capitals: THIS IS THE BEST RECORD I EVER MADE. The line-up with Clarence Shaw, Jimmy Knepper, Shafi Hadi, Bill Triglia and Dannie Richmond moves between street music, blues and long collective passages.
