For Crash, Charli XCX deliberately played the part of the major-label artist. The album, originally released in March 2022, was the last of her Atlantic contract and was presented as a slick, knowingly commercial pop album. The sound leans on 1980s pop and R&B, with glossy synths and tightly sung choruses. Good Ones, New Shapes with Christine and the Queens and Caroline Polachek, Beg for You with Rina Sawayama and Used to Know Me preceded it as singles. Crash entered the UK albums chart at number one, the first number one album of her career.
