Ronnie James Dio left Black Sabbath in 1982 and had a band of his own together within a year: Vinny Appice on drums, Jimmy Bain on bass and twenty-year-old Vivian Campbell on guitar. Holy Diver, originally released in 1983, was the debut and immediately a benchmark for American heavy metal. The title track drags itself along a slow, menacing riff, Stand Up and Shout opens at a gallop, and Rainbow in the Dark almost did not make the record: Dio found the keyboard hook too poppy and announced he would cut the tape up with a razor blade. Rolling Stone placed the album at number 16 on its 2017 list of the 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time. This edition is an LP as a picture disc, a limited Record Store Day Black Friday pressing.
