Emeli Sandé studied medicine in Glasgow and wrote songs for other artists before stepping forward herself with Our Version of Events. On her debut album her voice carries soul and pop, mostly over piano and strings rather than heavy beats. Heaven, with its drum and bass rhythm, and Next to Me became the best-known singles; Clown and My Kind of Love show the quieter side. In 2012 the album entered the UK albums chart at number one and became the best-selling album of that year in the United Kingdom, with more than a million copies sold. Her performances at the opening and closing ceremonies of the London Olympics sent the album back to the top that summer.
