200 Motels was Frank Zappa's attempt to capture life on tour in what he called a 'surrealistic documentary'. The 1971 film, which he wrote and co-directed with Tony Palmer, set The Mothers alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and gave roles to Ringo Starr, Keith Moon and Theodore Bikel. The soundtrack switches accordingly between orchestral passages, choral pieces, rock and spoken scenes, with 'Lonesome Cowboy Burt', 'Magic Fingers' and the closing 'Strictly Genteel' as its best-known moments. It was one of the first times Zappa brought his rock band and a symphony orchestra together in a single work. The soundtrack originally appeared in 1971 on United Artists Records. This edition is a box set of six CDs, adding demos, outtakes and dialogue reels from the archive to the remastered album.
