For the title track of Maggot Brain, George Clinton put guitarist Eddie Hazel in the studio with the instruction to play 'like your mama just died'. What came out is a solo of over ten minutes that opens the whole side and sets the tone of the album. Behind it stand the gospel harmonies of Can You Get To That, the heavy guitar funk of Super Stupid and the collage-like Wars Of Armageddon. The album was originally released in 1971 on Westbound Records, in the period when Funkadelic and Parliament largely shared the same musicians.
