First Rays of the New Rising Sun gathers the recordings Jimi Hendrix worked on in 1969 and 1970 for the double album he was never able to finish. The compilation originally came out in 1997, put together by Eddie Kramer, Mitch Mitchell and John McDermott under the supervision of the Hendrix family, and brings together seventeen tracks that had previously been spread across posthumous albums such as The Cry of Love, Rainbow Bridge and War Heroes. Freedom, Izabella, Dolly Dagger and Angel show how Hendrix pulled funk, soul and blues into his guitar playing, with Billy Cox on bass and Mitch Mitchell or Buddy Miles on drums. This edition is a 2-LP.
