Afro Blue Impressions gathers live recordings of Coltrane's quartet from the autumn of 1963, taped on 22 October at the Konserthuset in Stockholm and on 2 November at the Freie Universität in Berlin. Beside Coltrane are McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones; the material runs from 'Lonnie's Lament' and 'Naima' to extended readings of 'My Favorite Things', 'Impressions', and Mongo Santamaría's 'Afro Blue'. Producer Norman Granz released the tapes originally in 1977 on his Pablo label, ten years after Coltrane's death.
