Coltrane Plays the Blues gathers recordings John Coltrane made in October 1960 during the sessions for My Favorite Things, with McCoy Tyner, Steve Davis, and Elvin Jones. Six pieces, five of them written by Coltrane, all in blues form: from 'Blues To Elvin', composed by drummer Elvin Jones, to the run of 'Mr. Day', 'Mr. Syms', and 'Mr. Knight'. Atlantic put the album out originally in 1962, well after Coltrane had left the label and without any input from him on the sequencing.
