Giant Steps was the first album John Coltrane made as a leader for Atlantic and the first built entirely from his own compositions. The title track turns on a chord cycle that moves through three keys a major third apart, the so-called Coltrane changes, and has been standard practice material for saxophonists ever since. 'Naima' is named after Coltrane's wife at the time, 'Syeeda's Song Flute' after her daughter, and 'Mr. P.C.' after bassist Paul Chambers. The album originally appeared in 1960; in 2004 the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry.
